Helen Ali

I am a first generation Peruvian American and a fluent Spanish speaker, so I’ve always been the natural choice to translate for family and friends. I didn’t mind it at all – in fact, it was during those years of my life that I realized how much I enjoyed helping people and being their advocate.

Naturally, this led me to discover my love for nursing. I began working towards my dream of becoming a nurse in high school through regular rotations at my city’s hospital. Encouraged by my high school teacher and mentor, I began working as a nurse’s aide before applying to nursing school. There, I met my husband and we have been each other’s rock and biggest supporters ever since.

For the past seven years, I have worked as a nurse in different specialties – from surgical to cardiac. The one thing that I always bring with me, no matter where I work, is my strong work ethic, beliefs and values. I see myself and everyone around me as students of life and believe in the power of infinite learning. Like a trusty worker bee who’s always on the move, my goal is to contribute to creating a greatly improved healthcare ecosystem by being actively involved in the process.

Nursing has always been my greatest passion. Coming from a long line of nurses, I first worked as a Candy Striper at the same hospital I was born in before going on to become a nursing assistant in college, and a registered nurse in 2011.

I have worked in a diverse range of inpatient and outpatient roles, including the medical/telemetry unit of a community hospital, as a forensic nurse on a sexual assault response team for an urban trauma center, in corporate health with Fortune 500 companies in Southern California and Manhattan and most recently in outpatient endocrinology in New Jersey.

As a firm believer in holistic healthcare, I founded my health curriculum company, WellandKind to offer my patients the kind of services I would like for my loved ones and myself. My custom health curriculums are rooted in evidence-based practices but also offer innovative, people-centered solutions to introduce lasting lifestyle changes. I am working tirelessly to help people around the globe feel healthier and happier from the inside out.

I have been an RN for over 3 decades, with the majority of my career spent in direct patient care. I have been on my entrepreneurial journey for the last 2 years and am currently hosting a podcast: https://sherylsmithrn.com/podcast-2/. In early 2019, I’ll launching a new business in Western Puerto Rico.

I have always considered myself a strong patient advocate. In discovering the outside-the-box possibilities for nurses to continue to contribute in meaningful ways, I am shifting my focus to advocate for other nurses to explore the possibilities as well.

I obtained my BSN from The University of Delaware and my M.Ed from Cambridge College. I have been married to Mark for 30 years, and I am the mother to two adult children, Kyle 28, and Kara 25.
